"Managing Depression with Qigong" by Frances Gaik is a very well researched book on the "what" and "why" of qigong, rather than on the "how." Gaik describes what qigong is and offers many studies and examples of why qigong can be used to treat depression successfully. It also appears that Gaik looked for studies to reinforce the belief of qigong, and if you want "proof" that qigong works, this book sets out to prove it. The book is fairly short, but definitely well researched. There are ten pages of sources listed in the back. Some of the book gets a bit technical with the "why" qigong works. There are various charts showing things such as the change of blood serotonin, changes in plasma endorphins...

There is a subtle yet potent energy system circulating in our body which in the traditional Chinese medicine is recognized as Qi or Chi - loosely translated as "breaths." The Japanese named it "Ki," while in Indian medicine it is known as "Prana." Qi energy or breath is extremely vital as it is considered the "life essence" or "vital life energy" that maintains and nurtures our physical body, mind and spirit. It is often characterized as moving energy that changes quickly and replenishes daily. This powerful energy is made up of electric, magnetic, and is both an infrasonic (generating or using sound waves below that of audio-frequency range) as well as infrared vibrations circulating through our...

"Qigong Massage: Fundamental Techniques For Health and Relaxation" with Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is a comprehensive program on Qigong Massage that covers both partner massage and self-massage. The demonstrating is very clear with close-ups and the narration, along with subtitles, is clear, informative, and instructional. However, as I've mentioned in other reviews of YMAA DVDs, I much prefer when Dr. Yang teaches to the camera, rather than just having him go through the motions with someone else narrating with a voice over. I'm like this with all instructional DVDs. I like the instructor to speak and teach to the camera. With that said, I still gained a lot of information from this DVD, and I do...

I was once reading a book on women and heart health by a well respected M.D. The beginning of the book told a story about a woman who had a heart attack and was taken to the emergency room. The woman complained to the doctor that she had been doing everything healthy and right to take care of herself, while her husband had very poor health habits. The woman was angry. "Why me? Why not him?" she said. The doctor cited "the odds" as part of the reason this woman had suffered a heart attack. The doctor's answer rang so untrue within me that it killed my motivation to continue reading his book. I do feel that statistical data can be of value. However, seeing it ("the odds") considered as a cause or...

The knowledge Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming possesses never ceases to amaze me. He is truly a gifted martial artist, healer, and most importantly a teacher. His books and DVDs are extremely educational as well as inspiring. In this particular DVD, "Five Animal Sports Qigong" done with Kathy K. Yang, Dr. Yang explores and teaches an ancient and popular set of medical Qigong exercises. The first half hour of the DVD is lecture format with Dr. Yang providing some history of the Qigong exercises and Kathy Yang providing some explanation of the Table of Correspondences with the Five Organs that is included inside the DVD. (You can also find these under the "Quick Reference" on the DVD as well.) Dr. Yang's daughter...

There are many qigong schools in China. All schools emphasize regulating the mind and deepening the respiration. PHYSICAL - your resistance to coughs and colds increases, I've lost count of the number of students who pre-qigong only had to be looked at by someone with a cold and by the next day they'd have it. Practicing qigong they hardly, if ever get caught out by some 'bug'. There's a really good reason for this, as you practice qigong your energy starts to flow harmoniously through the energy pathways...

The 4 Things Worth Fussing About... In the introduction (titled 'How Rich?') to his book 'How To Get Rich', Felix Dennis writes: "Rich enough to buy the only two things apart from health and love worth fussing about in life. Time. And the option of not having to be in any particular place on any particular day doing any particular thing in order to pay the rent or the mortgage." Felix Dennis a man worth an estimated $400-900 million US dollars is stating that the only 4 things worth fussing about in life are: Health, Love, Time and Freedom. You probably won't be surprised to know that this got me thinking about just how brilliant qigong exercises are. Let's take a quick look at how qigong can help...

Qigong is a training method which can be traced back to second century China. Through practicing the training exercises of Qigong, an individual can enhance the body's vital energy, the Qi - the stream of life. Qigong leads to development of both mind, body and soul and has many positive effects. This article will give a brief introduction to the inspiring system of Qigong. Qigong is a series of exercises for mind and body. It has a close connection to traditional Chinese medicine and the energy flow in the body. By physical exercises and the power of the mind, a human can enhance and awaken the energy of the body - the Qi. Enhancing the Qi activates the body's own self-healing powers, which makes...

Qigong, as a health practice, has been in China for thousands of years. Those familiar with this practice understand the importance of breath, relaxation, and stillness as well as movement. To understand the relevance of this exercise to kidney health, one must understand the concept of "Qi". Qi (said "Chee") is simplistically our vital energy. That said, this concept goes much deeper in significance. It references not only the"primordial" energy or essence with which we are born, but also anything from which we receive energy like food, water, or air. The term "gong" signifies results or achievements. Qigong hence references the development of this energy internal to us. Various movements, postures...

Why are people going in for a kickboxing workout? That is because they know that this is an extremely fun routine. And once you going for a kick boxing workout, you know that you are not going through a routine which is concentrated on developing just a given number of muscles in a given part of the body. Many people do not know that all the important muscles in the thighs and the hip need to be developed because they belong to one common region. Man, am I fed up with not being able to lose weight. I've tried everything. Every new diet that comes out, every new exercise fad, I am on it. The problem is, I get bored, I stop doing it and I fall off the wagon over and over again. So what is the answer? My friend of many years, Mike, told me the secret to losing weight with exercise is to do something fun and exciting. Do something, he says, that you will want to do, not something you have to do. Find that something and you will exercise every day and it won't feel like exercise. Sounds good to me. I began with some classes at the local gym. Good stuff, I can tell you from first hand experience. The instructor was young and fit and very energetic...

I Assume You Have A Gym Membership This article assumes you have a gym membership which has cardio kickboxing classes available. If you don't have one, then get one! Do You Get Bored On The Bike Or The Treadmill? A lot of people get their cardio in on the stationary bike or the treadmill but if you're like me then you find it easy to get bored on these machines. Sure watching TV and listening to music can make it go by a little faster but it's still pretty boring. The hour can take forever to go by when I'm on the bike. The "excitement" factor is one of the main reasons that I enjoy taking a cardio kickboxing class. Sure it's a lot harder than just riding the bike (of course there's also benefits to...

Most people want to lose weight and know that there are two things they must do to accomplish this. One is to diet. Dieting doesn't mean starving yourself or skipping meals, it just means to eat healthy foods. The second thing is to exercise. The point of this is to burn off more calories than you consumed. This article will focus on the second thing. The most common form of exercise is running. When people think of working out, they normally think of spending an hour on the treadmill while sweating and being bored. This alone can prevent some people from even getting started. Although there are plenty of more exciting ways to get your heart pumping to burn off the calories, I'll be writing about...

Aerobic kickboxing is becoming very popular with some women and others are a bit confused as to how all that kicking and punching benefits their body. It may not look fancy but it is very effective.  All aerobic exercise is good but some forms are more effective. Kickboxing falls into that category. The more muscle groups you use during your workout the more calories you burn and the longer you are able to workout. That may seem contrary but it is true.  The human body is amazing. It is very conservative. It uses just what it needs to get the job done and no more. Some diseases put a kink in its system but a healthy human body works very well.  Exercise forms that use several muscle groups at one...

Do you enjoy kicking stuff? Perhaps you enjoy boxing? Do you like to workout too? If you answered yes to all three of these questions then kickboxing as a workout is right for you! The reasons kickboxing is a great workout are numerous, but let's touch on perhaps maybe the most important: weight loss. Kickboxing as an exercise utilizes your hands, arms, feet, and legs, all in fast, repetitive motions. When training on a punching bag a person who weighs 120 lbs can expect to burn over 300 calories in just 30 minutes. Not only that, but it doubles as strength training, so while calories are burned, muscle is toned. Combining an aerobic exercise (one that has a lengthy duration) with an anaerobic...

Are you wondering maybe kick boxing would be helpful as part of your exercise program? Many people are now including this into their regular workout. Kick boxing combines kicking, punching and boxing using the elbows, knees, head blows, kicks and punches. It seems to be a combination of karate and regular street fighting. However, the kicks are delivered to the shin area, so if you want to take part in a kick boxing class, you will first have to condition your shins to take hard kicks. It has been used all through history and as far back as the 1700s there were competitions. Many people like to use the kick boxing technique in their workout, without actually kicking anyone. The series of movements...

The decision to make yourself fit and healthier is definitely a good one. It is imperative that in this day and age, learning how to look after our body is one of the most essential means of enjoying and prolonging our life. Kickboxing as a means to do so is most definitely a decision that can let you reap benefits much more so as compared to there exercise programs. The problem is, like when enrolling in a gym, many people tend to back out as they either feel ashamed of how they look, or embarrassed that they are just beginners and would not have the guts to start out in front of others. The solution to both predicaments is to try to learn kickboxing in the confines of your own home. Like many...

Although you will literally spend hundreds or thousands of hours practicing the different sequences of combos, this will be very practical in situations where you have to protect and defend yourself. With the rising crime rate in our country, it would be a confidence booster knowing that you can handle yourself. Unlike action heroes, where only one blow is needed to take an attacker out, real life would require you to be able to quickly throw a series of moves to finish an attack. Why a series, well, the number speaks for itself, if your first blow is warded off, you have a second and third, or even a fourth in rapid succession, ready to take the bad guy out. This is not easily learned though, you...

A commentary on the wisdom of various quotes from the movie Kung Fu Panda. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Today? Today is a gift. That's why we call it the present. A great quote and probably the most well-known saying in Kung Fu Panda (and catchy too!). Tomorrow is over and finished with. Whatever happened, happened. Whatever didn't happen, didn't happen. Spending time and energy in the present fretting over things that are now history is a waste of your resources. Tomorrow is a mystery. We don't know what tomorrow will bring. Your life could change dramatically in the next 24 hours...or perhaps tomorrow will be much the same as today. Whatever plans you may make, the future is out of...

I don't know why but for me Kung Fu just isn't enough, Asian hair seems totally immune to straightening hair care products such or smoothing lotions and creams. Especially to all of us Japanese girls, you will know what i mean. We have courser strands of hair which never succumb to the Caucasian hair products designed style and straighten thinner and softer hair types. Lets face it Asian hair can be very unmanageable, even with regular hot irons, re bonding and trips to the salon, Asian hair has a mind of its own and can be quite a costly expense trying to manage it. I think it would also be fair to say that Asian hair has been left out of the hair care market and neglected for its specific needs...

In 1974 I was sitting on a cinder block in my backyard, tapping a piece of rebar on the patio and listening to music. Learning is both a conscious and unconscious process, your conscious mind will learn the movement but so will your unconscious mind and muscle memory. It is when we push both dimensions of our psyche to work that we get the best results. Every time you learn something, be it a movement or anything else, you create a neural network in your brain. Neurons fire in specific sequences to recall the movement and...

In other words, it helps to make the body's circulation system more efficient. The gentle stretching motion also works to slowly relax and rejuvenate sore or stiff muscle groups, particularly in the back and spinal regions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this exercise is believed to help the organs that are located in the upper torso, including the heart, lungs and stomach. This trio of organs are thought to be vital in regulating the chi energy through the body and generating the heat that the body produces. The deep breathing and stretching motions of...

MMA shin guards are designed to protect these crucial areas, preventing injury while allow the fighter to move and use his legs freely without any restrictions. All styles of Tai Chi Chuan have internal exercises or "neigong" which develop the called "changsijing" or winding silk power. It is most obviously performed in Chen style and Wu style Taijiquan. The common explanation of the movement is the analogy of "reeling the silk from a silk worm cocoon": in order to preserve from breaking the silk thread, the movement should be round, smooth and issued from the whole body. But this analogy has its limitations and for a deeper understanding but especially further practicing of it you NEED to understand the INTERNAL process within your body beyond pure mimic performance of silk reeling. To be more specific there are two points that are generally misunderstood...
