ody"> Let's face it - we're busier than ever these days and it's taking a toll. Health and relaxation therapy is all about the moments when we take back control. These moments energize us. They renew and inspire us. And yet, many people don't know where to start. The first step is empowerment. We must be willing to say, "I'm worth it!" Go ahead, try it. Say it again like you mean it—with force! Next, decide what you want to do about it. This is where your sense of self knowledge comes in to play. Be honest. Are you more likely to successfully make large changes or small ones? What about investments in time and money? If you resolve to get healthier and lose weight, for example, do you think you...

The Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Centre is the primary reason for many people travelling to this region on their China tours. In total there are fewer than 1,000 giant pandas currently alive and of this number 80% live in the Sichuan province. The breeding centre recreates their natural habitat in the best possible way so that the pandas have the best possible environment for breeding. On your China tour here you will spot many more endangered animals from the elusive red pandas to the black necked cranes. However, it's obvious that the giant pandas are the main emphasis for this centre and with 500 acres of land on which they can roam around, the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Centre is...

Poor Diet Addiction

Having a poor diet is probably one of the worst habits we can get caught up in. Smoking and drinking are habits or behavior patterns acquired by frequent repetition. Intake varies, while the debilitating and detrimental effects are generally long term. On the other hand, a poor diet can rapidly affect the body's ability to function properly. High-fat fast foods, while quick, cheap and easy, have very little to offer the body. Yet they have become prevalent in our fast-paced society. Fast food in general is very high in salt and fat, especially saturated fat. A salty diet is known to be a factor in the cause of high blood pressure. A diet high in saturated fat has been associated with increased blood...

Mind-Body Disconnect Prevents Weight Loss

Many people have fallen into the trap of what I call the metabolic spike. The metabolic spike is a situation that takes place when a person undertakes a vigorous, unsupervised (or even supervised) exercise program which causes an extreme rise in the metabolism, only to suddenly fall, leaving the individual feeling exhausted and incapable of a speedy recovery. This behavior can be instigated by many different triggers, but stress is usually a factor, not only the usual everyday stresses, but the additional burden of rushing through a workout. The metabolic spike can be counterproductive to what the person is actually trying to accomplish. Mindless workouts are what I define as workouts where there is...

Dynamic Thinking, which is basically thinking about thinking, evolves out of Attention Thinking (see my article Attention Thinking: Controlling the Mind). Dynamic Thinking calls for observing your thought process whenever possible during the normal course of your daily life. By engaging in this practice you will begin to become familiar with your own particular mental processes and start to see various patterns emerge. As with any mind-development practice, it can take time to see results, but perseverance will pay off in the end. Dynamic Thinking: In this exercise you will try to become aware of your thoughts at other times of the day. Dynamic Thinking constitutes a way to develop a greater mastery...

Imagine the Ordinary Mind as a thought prison and the ego as the warden. Anything that goes on within the Ordinary Mind is of concern to the ego. The ego labels everything we feel or think and gives these thoughts and feelings concrete definition. It defines the world around us. It tells us how we should feel about things. It controls our emotions. It constantly grasps for objects we desire or rejects things that we don't, often making life confined, claustrophobic, and confusing. The ego makes it very difficult to enjoy life because it is constantly telling us to look for something better or avoid something it tells us we don't want. It leaves very little time to actually experience life as we...

End a Fight Quickly - Top 7 Self Defense Techniques

5 stars of 5, 4 votes

People often wonder how to end a fight quickly, knowing or imagining that a prolonged confrontation can be dangerous. This is true, and a martial artist should be able to end a fight within a few seconds. Or at least this is desirable, since that's not always the case. Usually this is for a lack of knowledge. Below is a list of some of the most effective techniques for self defense. 1.) The straight punch. The straight punch, if executed with elbow down and through full body mechanics, is an extremely powerful, fast and simple technique. The hand doesn't even have to move from an guard stance--just the arm because the wrist and hand stay straight. This can be done in a whipping motion, or it can be...

Introduction- The basic straight You will be brought through the key points of throwing straights punches i.e. Jab (lead/front hand) & Cross (trail hand). In addition, a strong defensive guard is just as important as you attempt to throw your straight punches. I stress on the word "attempt" as your opponent could also choose to evade, block, parry or counter your strikes, especially so if your strikes are telegraphic. Hence, a strong guard must be formed even as your attack. Throwing the punch • Roll your fingers inwards and form a flat fist. In doing so, note that area of contact are the knuckles of the index (digitus secundus manus) and middle (digitus medius) fingers. In technical jargon, the...

Paris Gibson Square is one of the focal points of the downtown area of Great Falls, Montana. The building once served as Central High School, after being dedicated in 1896. Thirty-four years later, it became Paris Gibson Junior High, and retained that title for forty-five years. This means that the building has served as a center for education in Great Falls for over one hundred years. In 1977, the building was renovated by community volunteers and is now a nationally registered historic landmark. The community uses the Paris Gibson Square to promote and celebrate art and culture in Great Falls. The architecture of the building is elegant, with a stone façade that lends a regal air. The...

As mentioned in a previous article, 'Instant Relaxation Exercise: Self Massage of Head, Neck and Shoulders', this massage of Chinese origin acts to move the energy flow of the body in a particular orderly way according to the Chinese system of meridian energy circulation. This part of the self massage we are going to start in a moment is both relaxing and revitalising. It literally drains the tensions out of the body while stimulating the vital energy to flow, by gently tapping along the arms and chest. Let's start! Understanding the process of panic attacks itself can eventually help us to rise above them and not get taken in by and believe what the physical sensations might lead one to think of: that the worst is about to happen! I have read that one in 10 people can expect to have panic attacks at some stage. They can be very frightening experiences but are not actually harmful or dangerous. I used to have some now and again for quite a few years. They could start anywhere anxiety arose about being in a closed environment - in a plane, in a tunnel, in a lift, in an underground tube train - or in a very wide-open environment on my own (with no help at hand). The symptoms can include very fast heartbeat...

If you are ever in China and you awake early in the morning and venture out onto the streets you are likely to see Chinese people engaged in various forms of physical exercise. Chinese people of every age engage in these traditional exercises each day in public squares, parks and the countryside and have done so for centuries. Many will be stretching rhythmically. Some will be in synchronized groups performing what looks to be slow, very orchestrated movements of the body. You will also very likely see individuals practising the same art on their own. They are probably engaged in Tai-chi - a form of soft martial art. Others may be standing very still and assuming strange stances - they may be...

The ability to control blood pressure and other body processes naturally is the holy grail of alternative health practitioners. Now some of their claims once dismissed as fanciful are gaining mainstream respect. In particular, it seems that they're on to something with abdominal breathing and "chi-kung" - exercises that use breathing to heal and strengthen not only the heart but also the entire body. Some of this should be no surprise. We recognize that our respiration affects our circulation; breathing rate and heartbeat increase in sync in response to fear, anger and other stressors. Our blood pressure goes up to, although this we don't normally feel. The respiratory and circulatory systems are...

There are various practical, common sense ways of dealing with financial stress, such as: · taking an honest look at our finances · create a plan to reduce credit card debt · consult a debt counselling organisation · save money by cutting what is not essential. Apart from the practical aspects of starting to make a plan, we might well first need to get ourselves in a state of being able to do this intelligently, with a clear mind. We may need the help of a friend for this. Remaining calm is essential after the first anxiety bursts, or learn to get back to a certain level of calm by practising some deep breathing exercises for example. Breathing works well because it can be done anytime and...

Christmas Stress

Posted by admin

What is Christmas stress? Physiologically it is the same stress that we have about any problem that we perceive to be greater than our resources to handle it. The one thing that few of the stress writers talk about is how fast that stress response happens, which is at the speed of perception. Dr. Daniel Amen says in his PBS talk that electrons move around in our heads at a speed of 268 mph, which is fast even without considering the short distance those electrons have to travel even if going from ear to ear. Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi,Ph.D., in his book, FLOW, says that we perceive packages of data every 1/18th second, and Paul Ekman,Ph.D. says that we can respond physiologically to a look of contempt...

Courtship - Marriage

There are a number of very interesting courtship marriage researchers and writers out there now. Since courtship usually comes before marriage, we can start there, with Helen Fisher's work. Helen Fisher,Ph.D., has used functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, to exam brains that have recently fallen in or out of love, and she has put together a brain based model of this experience that we call love. It turns out that three systems of the brain are activated in courtship, the lust, trust, and love systems, and each of those systems is associated with a hormone which can be encouraged by engaging in certain activities. For example, the lust system is associated with androgen or testosterone...

Concentration Exercises

One of the best concentration exercises I have discovered for a lecture or conversation is to simply repeat the words of the person speaking to me inside my head. That simple concentration exercise keeps me from preparing my retort, and it also teaches me to listen for the speakers gifts. Taking a moment to repeat their words to myself allows me to see their strengths, and I get lots of good ideas that way. If I were actually in a a counseling session, I would be preparing to ask my client if I were hearing them accurately, which is a very important part of the process of building trust, and the reflective listening process. The simple act of repetition in conversation will teach me how fast my...

Isn't relationship quality supposed to just happen? Boy looks at girl, girl looks at boy, they are smitten, struggle for awhile to get together, and then perhaps with the help of the Fairy Godmother, they do get together and live in courtship bliss for ever after. Usually the end of the above process is worded, "They lived happily ever after", which is not true, because a relationship which grows in richness and deepness takes some real effort, but we are jumping ahead a bit. That model described in the first paragraph was the model I grew up with, fueled by Disney I guess, and that model is peculiar to the West. My parents did not teach me anything differently, and I knew that I did not want to...

The counselling relationship is the essence of the helping process in counseling, and I think it begins, at least in the clients mind, before there is ever any attempt to set up an appointment. So my first contact with a client will probably be by phone call, and I need to remember to create a cordial, and welcoming tone of voice and sustain it. No day dreaming allowed, no matter how many times I have returned client phone calls and scheduled an initial appointment. There may be questions and I need to remember the ambivalence or even resistance that the client may be experiencing, and respect it, while setting an expectation that positive results, which will be defined by the client, will flow from...

The stress connection to low back pain is one of the more common scenarios seen with patients who are suffering from this sometimes debilitating condition. Back pain is a 60 BILLION dollar problem in the U.S. and stress is one of the biggest factors involved. Stress is defined here as anything that is having a negative affect on our nervous systems and consequently influencing our musculoskeletal systems. Stress can be dietary, physical, emotional, occupational, etc. It all counts and it is all accumulative regarding the potential to impact our physiology in a manner that is far from positive. The U.S. is one of the most stressful countries to live in. Americans work longer hours and take less time...

Can Chi-gong cure an aching back? I came across the ancient Chinese practice of Chi-qonq or Qi-gong while looking for alternative back pain treatments. Wikipedia defines Qi-gong as follows: "Qi-gong (or ch'i kung) is an internal Chinese meditative practice which often uses slow graceful movements and controlled breathing techniques to promote the circulation of qi within the human body, and enhance a practitioner's overall health." There are also many forms of Qi-gong that are done with little or no movement at all, in standing, sitting and supine positions; likewise, not all forms of Qi-gong use breath control techniques. In its simplest form, the Chinese character for qi, in qi-gong, can mean air...

One of the most common mistakes made by many golfers during their setup routine is they use their feet to align themselves to the target. Although you may see many pros do this during their setup, I do not recommend this - especially if you are new to the game. Let me explain why. At the point of contact, there are only two variables of the swing that determine the flight path of the ball: 1) Club face alignment 2) Shoulder alignment The feet play little or no direct role in the flight path of the ball as you may imagine. It would make sense then to align both the shoulders and club face during your setup routine before your feet. The most common problem I see with my students during their...

Today there is a powerful spirituality movement. When I say spirituality I am not speaking of religion; I am speaking of something different--a connection with the Divine. This connection is what many mystics call "union with God." Sometimes this happens through a religious path, but not often. When it does the person who achieves divine union usually finds herself on the outside looking in. One time a minister in a somewhat interfaith organization told me that the spiritual ministers usually didn't make it as successful ministers. That statement and the truth of it says something in itself, I think. Spirituality is not a good thing when it comes to maintaining buildings or systems, which are...

Whether the human character is good or evil depends on which one of the "Li-xing, Qi-xing and Zhi-xing" (True, Spiritual and Materialistic Character respectively) dominates. The True character is the essence of Tao as well as the soul of a human. It is all good and has no evil. The Spiritual character is the "yang" (positive) side of the "Tai-ji" ('Tai-ji' is 'yin' and 'yang.' Tai-ji Qi-tien means Heaven of Spirit with 'yin' and 'yang'), which is evolved from Tao, and the property of a human's "hun" (Spirit of consciousness). It is sometimes pure and sometimes contaminated. Therefore, it can be good or evil. The Materialistic Character is the "yin" (negative) side of "Tai-ji", and the property of a...

The eight trigrams formed the foundation of the earliest holy scripture of China, "I Ching". Five thousand years ago, Emperor Fu Shi obtained the true Tao after seeking twenty-four masters. When he was bestowed upon the Decree of Heaven, a sacred diagram on the body of a dragon horse was revealed to him after appearing from the river Ho. It was called the Diagram of the River. There were fifty-five dots of "Yin" and "Yang" to represent the five elements - water, fire, wood, metal and earth. After learning the diagram, he observed the Heaven and Earth, studied the conditions of the environment, habits and forms of animal and bird. From these observations, he then started to formulate the eight...

It further subdivides these three regions into twenty-eight sub-regions, depending on their pureness. Heaven of Desire has six-regions, Heaven of Image has eighteen, and Heaven of Non-image has four. Taoism partitions Heaven into thirty-six sections because there are three-hundred and sixty degrees ia a circle. Taoism also classifies Heaven into seven levels, which correspond to the seven levels of one's pratice, and is similar to that of Christianity and Islam. Heaven is also commonly classified into twelve levels. Tao Te Ching states: One gives...
